Everlasting Father

Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Everlasting Father.

In Hebrew, this phrase literally translates to Father of eternity.

Jesus was born a baby, He is the Son of God, and He is the Father of eternity—the Word, who, in the beginning of time, was with God and was God (John 1:1). He was glorified with the Father before the world began (John 17:5). He is the Author of life (Acts 3:15) and the Author and Finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). He knows the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come (Isaiah 46:10).

This is why the government is on his shoulders.

EVERYTHING is on his shoulders.

And we can know him. The Son of God, the Father of eternity, came as a baby to give his life so we can know him. So we can know God. So we can know his counsel, his power, and his peace.

He’s wonderful. He’s awesome. He’s extraordinary. He’s beyond our ability to comprehend.

Yet we can know him.

We may not have control, but we know the One who does. The Father of eternity.

Oh Lord, thank you! Thank you for coming for us. Thank you that we can know you. Help us to understand and utilize the gift we’ve been given through Jesus. Amen.
