God Does Not Belittle Your Need

John 2:3, 6-8, ESV

When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”

Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it.

And the water had become wine—better-tasting wine than that which it was replacing.

Jesus wasn’t planning on starting his ministry of miracles at this moment, but when the need was brought before Him, His compassion moved him to act.

When we look at this first miracle recorded in Scripture, it might seem like this need pales in comparison to the many other needs Jesus met through the miracles He performed.

But this need mattered to Jesus just the same—and so does ours.

There is no hierarchy of needs that God is willing to meet. God does not belittle our needs. The writer of Hebrews says it like this in Hebrews 4:19: “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

And Jesus Himself said in Matthew 7:11, “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”

So don’t be afraid to bring your need to Jesus. He desires to be brought into the details of our lives, and His compassion and love for us move Him to act on behalf of our needs—no matter how “small” they might seem to us.
