God Speaks in the Wilderness
Hosea 2:14, ESV
“Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her.”
The word wilderness in the above verse (and all over the Old Testament) comes from a Hebrew word (dabar) which means “to speak.”
All throughout Scripture, the wilderness represented God speaking.
God spoke to Abraham as he sojourned through the wilderness.
God spoke to Jacob through a dream in the wilderness.
God spoke to Moses through a burning bush in the wilderness.
God spoke to the people of Israel on a mountain in the wilderness.
God spoke to David while he was hiding in the wilderness.
God spoke to Elijah under a bush in the wilderness.
And on and on and on. Even Jesus went into the wilderness to speak with God.
This is why wilderness seasons often precede seasons of great movement—because the wilderness is where God speaks life-altering messages to us if we’re listening.
So when God leads us into a wilderness season, then we must lean in—for He has much to say to us if we’re willing to listen.
