Speak Truth to Your Soul
Psalm 42:11 ESV
Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.
There is a plethora of research which proves the power of speaking positivity into our lives; but, as Christians, it’s so much more than that. We don’t merely throw out statements of positivity to muster up sentiments of hope, we speak the truth of God’s Word as those who place our hope IN the salvation of our sovereign, almighty, loving God.
All over Scripture, the heart, the mind, and the mouth are connected. We know that what is in our heart and mind will come out of our mouth, but do we also realize the power of our mouth to affect our heart and mind?
Our words have so much power—power to bring life or death (Proverbs 18:21), power to set the course of our lives on fire (James 3:6), power to build up those around us (including ourselves) (Ephesians 4:29). When we SPEAK truth, then we have the power to bring life, hope, peace, joy, etc. to our heart and our mind.
So we’ve got to be purposeful about what we speak. If it’s not a truth that aligns with Scripture, then we just shouldn’t speak it. For example, these things are directly opposed to the truth of God’s Word:
This situation is hopeless
No good can come from this
I can’t handle this
This is going to take me out
When we speak things that are in direct contradiction to truth, we give those statements power over our heart and mind—and the result is sorrow, anxiety, worry, depression, etc. But when we speak the truth of God’s Word instead…
I always have hope in Christ
God will work all things together for my good
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me
God has good plans for my life, and he will get me to them
…then we use the power of our tongue to bring life, hope, joy, and peace to our heart and mind.
Oh Lord, thank you for the power You have given us through your Word, and please help us to be aware of what we allow to come out of our mouths. Help us to have the determination to speak truth and only truth, that it may benefit those who listen, including ourselves. Amen.
