The Secret of Being Content

Philippians 4:11-13, NIV

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

 

Content. Did you know this is the only place in scripture where this word is used in this form? It is used in two other places as a noun, but this is the only place it’s used as an adjective—describing a state of being. 

 

And it’s written from a prison cell.

 

Paul said he had learned (and don’t forget, learning is a process;) the secret of being content in any circumstance—even in a prison cell. 

 

So what’s the secret?

 

The answer is more simple than we would probably like. There’s no formula or code—only the choice to lean in to what’s already within us. 


The Greek word translated content means “sufficient/satisfied within.” Because of Jesus, we have the Holy Spirit within us. Therefore, we can have an inward sufficiency/satisfaction in all circumstances through him who gives us strength—if we choose to. 

 

Allow me to point out two other verses written by Paul in which forms or parts of this Greek word are used: 


2 Corinthians 9:8, ESV

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

 

2 Corinthians 12:9a, ESV

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 

 

When we choose to lean into the grace of God, and stand defiantly against discontentment and self-pity, then we make room for the power of God to strengthen us, to be perfected in us, and to cause us to abound in every good work. Some days it’s more difficult than others, but it’s always worth it. 


Oh Lord, thank you for your grace. Thank you for your strength and your power that live within us through your Spirit. Help us to choose contentment so that we make room for these things to be displayed in and through our lives. Amen.
