There is Enough

Psalm 23:1, 5

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want…You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Philippians 4:19

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

We have a hummingbird feeder hanging from a tree in our front yard, and every year I’m amused by watching them. One bird will stand guard and fend off any others which try to come near and drink, sometimes flying a considerable distance to chase the other ones away. The little bird is completely unaware that there is plenty of liquid in the feeder for all of them and plenty more where that came from, even if it is out of sight.

One day as I saw this taking place, I heard the Lord speak to me and say, “territorialism stems from the fear that there’s not enough.”

Oh goodness, Lord help us.

How often do we act like that little bird, wasting energy trying to guard what’s ours when God has plenty more in reserve?! We do this financially, professionally, or even relationally. We’re afraid to share what we have (our money, our positions, our influence, our relationships) because we unwittingly fear that if we do we will be left without.

But I believe God wants to remind us today that there is enough. There is more than enough.

Whatever your need is at this moment, God will supply it. Every need. Your sharing with someone else will not take away from what God has for you.

Your cup will continue to overflow, even when you share it with someone else.

Oh Lord, thank you once again for your promises. Please increase our faith to believe that your provision is there even when we can’t see it. Please help us to understand that sharing what we have with others will never take away from us what you have for us. May we never operate out of a spirit of territorialism and fear that there’s not enough, but may we always operate out of a spirit of abundance and a deep belief that there is always more than enough through you. Amen.
