What Sound are You Hearing?
1 Kings 18:1, ESV
After many days the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the earth.”
1 Kings 18:41, ESV
And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is a sound of the rushing of rain.”
God told Elijah it was going to rain, and Elijah believed. Elijah heard the voice of God and believed it.
When Elijah told Ahab there was “a sound of the rushing of rain,” there was no literal sound. It was not raining yet—there were not even any clouds in the sky.
Yet he heard the sound anyway.
He heard the sound of truth. He heard the sound with his spirit before he heard the sound with his ears.
So what sound are we listening to? What sound do we hear?
When God has spoken a promise in our lives, we have to block our ears to the sound of anything else but the sound of His voice. Even when there’s nothing happening—when there’s absolutely no trace of the promise in front of us—we have to hear the sound in our spirit.
We must never lend our ears—nor our mouth—to anything but the voice of truth.
Elijah heard and believed God's promise, then he spoke in faith, prayed in faith, and waited.
And God sent the rain.
Oh Lord, thank You that You speak to our situations, and help us to have the faith to believe You. Help us to listen and speak in faith, even when there's no trace of the promise in front us. Help us to be persistent in prayer, and give us the patience to wait for the answer. Amen.
