Wonderful Counselor

Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

We’re going to be in this verse all month as we explore these beautiful names God gave to describe His Son so many years before His birth, starting with the first one—Wonderful Counselor.

The Hebrew word translated wonderful means “something extraordinary, marvelous, miraculous, beyond understanding”—a “wonder.”

The Hebrew word translated counselor means “to advise, to counsel, to plan.” This word is used about 15 times in the book of Isaiah, and 7 of those times it is translated planned or purposed. For example, in Isaiah 14:24:

“The LORD of hosts has sworn: ‘As I have planned, so shall it be, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand,’”

Through Jesus Christ—our Wonderful Counselor—we have access to the one who knows all, who plans all, and who purposes all.

When we WONDER where to go, what to do, when to act, how to move, then all we have to do is go to Jesus. Through Jesus, we have never-ending access to:

  • Wisdom which is beyond understanding

  • Extraordinary advice for every situation

  • Marvelous counsel from the One who knows all

Just as we go to our counselor in high school or college to help guide our decisions, so can we go to Jesus at any moment in any season to help guide our decisions—and we will have access to the wonder of heavenly wisdom!

Oh Lord, thank You for the gift of Your Son! Thank you for the wonderful counsel we have access to through Jesus, and help us to utilize it. Amen.
